What is a virtual job interview?
A virtual or online job interview is a way for an interviewer to conduct a remote meeting through a video conferencing platform such as Zoom, Google Meet, or Skype with the hiring perspective.
7 Tips to Help You Navigate Through Your Virtual Job Interview
When preparing for a traditional interview, make sure you know the company.
Think about the answers to the possible questions they might ask and write your own questions.
Print your resume to have it ready in case you need to take a look. While you still have to do all of this for a virtual interview, there are additional steps you need to take.
1.) Prepare before the virtual interview
Unlike traditional face-to-face interviews, online interviews come with additional technical issues to consider. Does my camera work? And my microphone? Do I have enough space on my computer to download Zoom? That’s why at Kickresume we’ve compiled a checklist for you, so you don’t have to stuff all that extra baggage on your head and instead can focus on what really matters, the actual job interview.
Camera and microphone. Recording yourself before your job interview is not only a good way to see if your camera and microphone will work properly, but it is also a good way to check what your interviewer will look like and sound like.
Headphones. A good pair of headphones is recommended as audio straight from a computer is often mediocre. The last thing you want is for the interviewer to repeat himself too often because he can’t hear you properly.
Drums. This one is simple, but easy to forget in the heat of the moment. Have a fully charged computer and if you have a bad battery in your laptop, make sure it’s plugged in.
Internet connection. Try to have the virtual interview in a place with a good internet connection. Unfortunately, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it could be difficult to go elsewhere if your connection is weak. In such a case, you can request a telephone interview, although it may not work in your favor and we recommend that you do so only if you have no other options.

Username. Although you’ve been known online as sexycat69 for a long time, maybe it’s time to put your gamertag aside, at least for the web interview. A good rule of thumb is to simply use your first and last name. Your username is one of the first impressions your interviewer will get of you, and it’s an easy first impression to get right.
Profile. Like your username, this too will be one of the first impressions you make. However, you can have more fun with this one. For example, if you are applying for an outdoor activities company, show your interest in outdoor activities. Put that picture of you going through that fourteen.
2.) Dress the part
You probably have this image etched in your mind. A lonely person sitting in front of his computer, fresh hair, a clean dress shirt, and a big smile on his face. An otherwise professional image of someone who works or interviews online.
However, one thing is missing, his pants.

Research the company’s dress code. This should only take a few minutes and will remove a lot of your doubts. Remember, in today’s work environment it is no longer as simple as wearing a suit. If you can’t find a dress code on their website, you can always email a human resources representative.
Choose saturated colors like ruby red and emerald green to highlight facial features and avoid pastel colors as they can look washed out on camera. Also, say no to that shiny shirt of yours, as the goal is to draw attention to yourself and not your clothes.
Avoid revealing clothing. When the company stated that they were looking for an employee who could be a valuable asset, they were not literally referring to assets.

3.) Set your background
When you are interviewed online, a hiring manager is likely to judge everything they see on your background.
Therefore, the best background for a video interview is one that is clutter-free. A well-lit, neutral background would be ideal to avoid distractions. If you want to have objects in the background, try to make them relevant to the job you will be interviewing for.

To avoid interrupting your interviewer, wait a second or two after they have finished speaking before beginning your response.
Send a thank you email after the interview, a little more can go a long way.
5.) Pay attention to your body language.
Did you know that up to 65% of our communication is non-verbal? Makes you wonder how much of our online communication is lost in translation with just one video of us visible.
Look at the camera from time to time to simulate eye contact. Another way to do this is to minimize the window, not too small so you can still see your interviewer, and move it below your camera.
Maintain good posture during the interview. Lean forward a bit as this not only helps with your posture but is also a sign that you are interested, keep your back straight and raise your computer / laptop monitor so that it is at eye level. There are many video conferencing platforms for online interviews. You will need to be flexible and learn to use the one suggested by your potential employer for your virtual job interview.
Most companies use Zoom, Skype, and Google Hangouts / Google Meet. Most platforms work directly from a website browser, however we recommend that you download the app to make your interview smoother.
1.) Zoom tips for virtual interviews
Zoom is one of the most popular video conferencing tools. It allows the conversation between two and more people, the talks of the free version are limited to 40 minutes in length.
To attend the virtual interview through Zoom, you need a meeting link and access code potential employer. If you haven’t provided it yet, send them a message requesting it.
Learn how join the meeting Zoom ahead so you are not late for your interview. On the other hand, it is good to know that some interviewers use the same “meeting rooms”, or the same access codes, for multiple interviews. You don’t want to be remembered for interrupting someone else’s job interview.

Microsoft Tool Skype is known for video calling. Similar to Zoom, it lets you mute the audio and choose if you want to be seen on camera (this is definitely not the time to get nervous in front of the camera!). Additionally, Skype encourages businesses to use HD calling for higher quality video and audio.
With Skype, you don’t risk entering other job seekers’ space and time. The call will be scheduled just for you and those who are about to hear why you want that job.
Skype, like Zoom, also allows you to record the interview. The application will save your interview online in chat for the next 30 days.

3.) Tips for Google Hangouts / Meet interviews
Google Meet, which pre-dated Google Hangouts, is a platform created for video calls by Google. Some of the benefits of this virtual interview tool are the ability to have multiple users on a call (Google Meet allows up to 250 participants to join if the company hosts a meeting) or the ease of joining a meeting.
You do not need to have a Google account to use Google Meet; however, it is easier if you have one. As in the case of any other platform, create your account and customize it in advance.
Before your online interview, you must provide your email address associated with your Google account to the potential employer so that they can connect for the actual online interview. If you don’t have a Google account, you will need a link to join the interview.
Finally, you can easily schedule your interview on Google Calendar. When an employer does this, the link to the meeting is created automatically.
