Tips for Resumes and Cover Letters

Resume

It is always a good idea to tailor your resume to the needs of the company. Remember that an Australian hiring manager probably doesn’t know the details of the job you had in your home country. A well-known American company may not be as well-known in Australia. Therefore, always try to explain a little about the business or company.

Also, if you are a local business, you should adjust your resume to Australian standards:

  • Less is more. Keep the design simple, without fancy fonts or colors.
  • Use Australian English (yes, it is not the same as American English).
  • Make sure to keep your personal information with only your name and contact details. Never include information about age, marital status, race, or religion on your resume. And without photos!
  • Write it in a reverse chronological format with bullets and about two pages.
  • Include a mission statement or your career goal at the beginning. Two or three sentences will suffice.
  • Make your resume achievement-oriented; Don’t just express your work experience, but be sure to highlight your special skills and notable accomplishments.

For inspiration, take a look at the CV samples (you can even filter them by keyword “Australia”).

Presentation letter

Don’t get carried away by your cover letter and ramble on about your hopes and dreams of working in a foreign country. It will seem very needy.

Focus on getting a job, not getting to Australia. Explain in detail how you could add value to the company despite not being from the country.

Not sure about your cover letter? These cover letter samples will help you.
