While an internship resume highlights your educational history, a standard resume should highlight your relevant work experience as this is what employers are looking for.

Fortunately, internships count as work experience, and adding it to your resume can provide you with full-time work.

When should you include an internship on your resume?

Internships provide valuable work experience and provide a great opportunity for graduates or those with little work experience to develop important professional skills.

You should include an internship on your resume if:

  • You are a current student or graduate
  • You have minimal work experience
  • You have internship experience that is highly relevant to the desired job

Listing internships on your resume isn’t always the right step, however. If you are years in your career and struggling to list all of the relevant experiences on a one-page résumé, consider leaving out internships. This gives you more space to highlight achievements from your full-time positions.

Where to include an internship on your resume

List your internships in the Work Experience section of your resume. Each internship should be placed next to previous jobs or projects that you have worked on.

If you are using a chronological resume, list each internship in the order you did it, with the last position at the top.

Here’s how to list an internship on your resume

List your internship experience in the same format as any full-time positions you’ve held.

For each internship you have completed, provide the following information:

  • Name of the company or organization for which you interned
  • Your position title
  • Start and end dates of your employment (including month and year)

Provide a bulleted list below detailing the projects, responsibilities, and successes you achieved during your internship.

Make sure you shape your successes in terms of how your presence has directly contributed to the success of the entire company. Whenever possible, use hard numbers like percentages, financial numbers, and / or hours spent on a specific project.
